Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.-One More Week, Deke Shaw, and Time Travel

One more week, people!!! Only one more week to go! Wednesdays are about to become my favorite day of the week.

So, yesterday, Marvel shared a little clip from Episode One, and I thought it’d be cool to share it and talk a little about it here! It features Daisy, Deke, Mack, and Coulson (who’s now a Chronicom-basically a really fancy robot version of himself.) They’re all exploring the 1930’s. Go ahead and take a look!

I’ve watched this wayyy too many times already.

First things first, Deke is easily my favorite part of this clip. He and Daisy are so excited to have time traveled. Everyone’s gone through so much the last few seasons, so it’s nice to see them happy for a change.

The things Deke says just crack me up!

Deke: I know, I got all this stuff for like thirteen bucks; I love it here.

Coulson: It’s the Great Depression.

Only Deke could be that happy during an economic crisis. Then again, like he says, it is more like what he’s used to.

I’ve been thinking about the way he explains time travel here, and comparing it with the explanations we’ve gotten before. In Avengers: Endgame, they said that any changes you make create an alternate timeline. It seemed like this was what they were going with in Seasons Five and Six of S.H.I.E.L.D., since they changed the timeline there, but Deke still exists.

Is Deke’s explanation here different? I think it is. He even mentions “the multiverse branch theory” which sounds like our former time travel explanation, and goes on to say he believes the “timestream idea.” The way he says it, it sounds like small changes are fine, as long as there aren’t too many, otherwise some unspecified consequences will occur.

I’m interested in how they ultimately deal with the whole “changing the past” thing. Honestly, I don’t care much either way; I love time travel stories. They’d just better be careful of paradoxes!

Two more honorable Deke mentions:

“Splash around a lil bit.”

“I will tread ever so lightly, Director,” he says sarcastically before turning and immediately running into a random person. (Side note, I wonder if that random person is going to end up not being so random after all?)

Well, if we’ve learned anything from this post, it’s that Deke Shaw is one of my favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. characters, after Fitz of course.

Speaking of Fitz, I heard that he’s not going to be in this season very much, due to the actor, Iain DeCaestecker, being unavailable. I really, hope that’s not true; if it is, I really don’t know what I’ll do. I wouldn’t be too surprised, since he was already separated from the rest of the team at the end of Season Six. But until I actually see the season, I’m giving this tidbit of information the benefit of the doubt.

Have a good week, everyone; hopefully it goes by fast! Be sure to check back in here next Wednesday for the final Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. countdown post!

Till next time!
